Swans Get One back On Cork (12/07/07)
On Saturday the 12th of July the Swans took on the Lions at home in Terenure. Having lost against the Lions earlier in the year the swans were out to make amends in what would be a top of the table decider. A great turnout from the swans saw them get 18 players down and cork travelled well getting 14 of their own up to Dublin.

On the smaller ground it was important for the swans to get a good start and kicking with the breeze that’s exactly what they did winning the ball early and sending plenty of chances down to the forwards. An inaccurate kick from cork allowed the pres to steal a mark and put the first major on the board for the swans. This was quickly followed by majors from Rossy playing off half back and the swans new power forward Scotty.

In the second cork made a brief comeback making use of the breeze, quickly answering with a major but inaccurate kicking led to more points than goals. Some hard hits and good run still putting the swans under some pressure. Tall man Luke Ohea moved from the ruck to float across half back and immediately started pulling down marks from everywhere. Some hard running from Dave and Bryce in the middle saw the flow of ball continue and the swans managed to equal cork in scoring opportunities going in the major break three goals up.

The third quarter saw much of the same however both teams began faltering a little with their marking up and delivery of the ball. The breeze had begun to die down and more accurate kicking was needed to get the ball forward. Continued efforts from Scotty and Matt in the forward line put a couple of majors through but inaccurate kicking saw more points and possible changes to the forward structure could be forthcoming (we all know sleepy simon wants a crack at it but I just can’t see it happening).

During the last term cork made one more push and came close to kicking themselves back into it but too many points cost them and the swans managed to hold them off. Great work from Brent and Paddy in the backline helped keep the ball out of the cork forward line during the match and they rebounded well. Highlight of the day: The pres found new Irish recruit little matty on the wing who screamed into the pocket and slotted through a lovely goal (I’ve never seen a bigger grin).
The swans finishing off with a great win over a tough team 10.11.71 to 3.10.28.
