  ARFLI Season 2008

Welcome to the South Dublin Swans season 2008. With two grand final finishes under their belt the SDS are ready for another year. The ever expanding list and solid foundations that have been laid down over the past three years have primed the club to have another crack at the title. After taking the flag in 2006 the boys were a little disappointed in their 2007 campaign but are ready and willing to go the distance for 2008. The pre season looks set to begin around the 1st of March with the home and away season to kick off around April to September.

Training usually runs on Wednesday nights at Terenure Rugby Club. No experience is necessary just rock up and see what we’re all about. Stay tuned to the site as it will be updated as more info becomes available.

Round 4 (26/04/08)

Congrats to the lads on the weekends game for a hard fought 3 point win over the mullingar tigers. The first quarter saw the Swans come out firing on the small pitch, however this didn't show on the scoreboard with the tigers slightly up at the qtr time break. Goals were scarce in the next few qtrs but the tigers managed to maintain their slender lead of 2 goals going into the final break. Some stirring words at 3 qtr time from Scotty put the wind up the boys and the swans came out firing kicking a couple of goals to cut the lead. To the tigers credit they continually pushed forward kicking a couple in the last quarter but some great work all over the ground by the swans saw the forward line snap into some great action by posting 4 majors for the quarter and holding on to the final siren.

Special note, the swans definitely need some goal kicking practice after posting a final score of 6.14 to 7.5.

Some of the highlights of the day:
Some great play by Rambo Jim in the ruck who was a tireless worker all day against a strong tigers ruckman, he really has stepped up over the past few games showing again what a valuable asset he is going to be this season. And special mention to Ash again for his commitment to the team getting a heavy crunch in the first qtr k.o'd him but coming back on later in the game and throwing his body around at the ball. Great stuff Ash... Jimmy the lips also was getting amongst the action all day also popped up for some fantastic grabs in the last qtr floating across half forward really giving the swans a target, Dave Hourn seemed to be everywhere throughout the game racking up the possessions keeping the stat man busy, the new kid on the block Darren showed some impressive form for his first afl game, his pace and hard efforts and skills showed he is also going to be very handy in the engine room, and Ryan and Macca in the back line showing their Dermott Brereton form busting through packs not afraid to get the hard balls and the coach put in some great performances all around the ground creating many options for the swans.

Overall, a great effort and still the swans can and will improve over the coming games.

Just on a side note, a great time was had Saturday night at the Trivia night with approx 7 - 8 teams participating. The main prize going to a mixture of the demons, tigers and the saints players.

Round 3 (12/04/08)

The final result was a win on Saturday against 2007 cup holders Cork by 2 goals 14 points.
Final Score 9 .18 to 7.4.
It was very much a team effort with 8 different goal kickers for the day, however a pretty poor effort in front of goal kicking 18 points… Winning the toss gave the Swans the advantage of the breeze from the outset, but we failed to capitalise and only added two majors leaving the Lions well within reach.

The back line worked hard from the outset and left the Lions scoreless in the first term, some great running out of the back line by Ryan who didn't avoid the tough clashes bursting through packs like Dermott Brereton. Also working hard in the backline were Martin & John particularly in the second quarter when Cork were coming back with a burst where they added three majors to leave them only 20 points down at the main break.

Rambo (Jimmy) was a tireless worker the whole day (and that evening on the dance floor at Sth William) showing if you really want the ball, you will get it - throwing his body on the line when ever he could. Ed & Enda assisted by providing some great run through the centre corridor to set up numerous opportunities up forward. Macca swanning around the half back line without an opponent in sight also opened up many opportunities to attack.

Down in the forward line Niall & Elmo showed some great skills to give an indication they will be valuable assets over the coming months. Jimmy J showed some guts also getting in amongst the action and Dom's stirring speech at the break and some good on field play showed his commitment to the team. The Lions' late surge toward the end did have a few people concerned, but the Swans pulled together and came out victorious at the final siren.

Round 2 (02/04/08

The Round 2 game (April 5th) against Kerry was a forfeit by them..

2008 Season begins
Round 1 (29/03/08)

The opener of the season was looking good early on in the day with sunshine bathing the pitch prior to the start. This soon turned and the wind arrived along with plenty of rain and sleet, most of which remained on the surface. It was not a good day for the changerooms & showers to be somewhat off limits due to the other rugby games being held, but the lads made do and got into the bar for a few beers anyway.

The Demons had a lot of the play and retained much of the possession in the first term, leaving the Swans a bit flat-footed from the outset. Although the end of the quarter saw some good promise from many of the new recruits, particularly John & Gareth, however it failed to show on the scoreboard for the Swans.

The Swans with a few rotations settled in better in the second quarter assisted by the breeze, and added four goals to the scoreboard with plenty of team play. The third term saw the Demons peg back the margin to within eight points, again assisted by the breeze and some good running through the centre. In the final quarter it was the Swans who again had much of the possession, with Bundy and Matron figuring in the stats. The Swans adding a further three goals to claim a six goal victory at full time.

The score were 08.10(58) to 04.08(32)

Goal Scorers:
Scott Sloan(Matron) - 4
Alex Woods(Bundy) - 3
Enda Keena - 1

2008 Pre-Season Cup (08/03/08)

It was a great effort from the guys who went to Limerick on the weekend for the pre season cup.

In conditions that involved rain, sleet, strong winds and of course a muddy ground, the lads won the first game against the tigers by 7 points and went straight into the grand final against arch rivals Cork. The game started off at a frenetic pace on the big ground, however the 9 a side rule started to take its toll on the fitness of the swans players, going into the half time break slightly down.

The second half saw a resurgence by the boys, however with a couple of quick goals from cork, the game was then out of reach, going down by about 3 goals.
